Playing the best rockabilly rarities from the fifties, surfin, spy and garage rock from the sixties and wild originals from the hereafter, they put on a fantastic show. If Imelda May had this much attitude she still wouldn’t be fit to tune their guitars….

The Vamp are a superbly energetic seven piece hotchpotch of musicians from across the UK, Italy, Uzbekistan and Poland that cite influences as wide as Gogol Bordello, Tom Waits and Django Reinhardt. An ideal Saturday night Gladstone band, you’ll hear flavours of Eastern European folk, Balkan and Turkish infused rowdy sea shanties, pirate rock and gypsy jazz- the type for drinking and dancing to that is- mixed with what we could only describe as how the house band in a Bukowski novel might sound..

http://www.myspace.com/thevamplondon

The Vamp onstage on 10.00 pm

The Yes Mess are fast becoming one of our favourite acts to play here at The Glad, there’s no-one quite like them. They’re an enigmatic, super-funky, hook laden, multi layered ensemble that rattle the same hallucinatory cages as the Beta Band at their oddest, with elements of Syd’s Pink Floyd in the mix.

The Yes Mess onstage at 9.00 pm

Described by Time Out as playing ‘dusk-lit songs, strong and tender and sung in a voice that curls darkly at the edges in a way that’ll entice fans of Joanna Newsom and Regina Spektor’, the wonderfully talented Ellie Rose Rusbridge brings her full band to the Glad tonight for what promises to be a very special performance.

Dear Joy, a music project created by Thai/Scandinavian singer/songwriter Lou Vilstrup, play ensemble folk informed as much by Eastern European gypsy styles as contemporary alternative acoustic singer songwriters. Vilstrup’s strong voice, beautiful ear for melody, and finely wrought lyrics are complemented by excellent arrangements and sympathetic group accompaniment.

Currently working with Talk Talk producer Tim Friese-Green, East London collective Firefly Burning blend influences from the chamber folk style of Sufjan Stevens and the post-minimalism of John Adams. to modern classical composition and Eastern and African folk music.

**** WE’RE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THIS ONE, DON’T MISS IT!!!

We have a very special performance this evening from acclaimed Senegalese percussionist, songwriter and guitarist Amadou Diagne, and Groanbox multi-instrumentalist and singer Cory Seznec. This promises to be a real high point of our year, definitely not one to be missed!

Born into a large Griot family of Sabar drummers Amadou Diagne has been surrounded the traditional music of his home from the beginning, and it is this well of tradition from which he takes his inspiration for his own music. Over the years he has played such giants of African music as Youssou N’Dour and Cesaria Evora. His unique finger picking guitar style is enhanced by percussive slapping of the strings and drumming on the guitar body to explore and improvise as he plays.

Franco-American Cory Seznec is one third of the Guardian four star favorites the Groanbox Boys. A truly impressive roots act, they blend influences from all over the world, combining their basis in American old-time and bluegrass music with African, Cuban and European folk influences. Seznec is equally adept at fingertsyle guitar, claw hammer banjo, vocals, harmonica and a variety of other stringed instruments.

Perennial favorites here at The Glad The Ramshackle Union Band peddle a fine line in bluegrass-tinged indie folk. The rich three-part harmonies and raucous tumbling rhythms in their alt-Americana sound calls to mind the country funk of The Band and the rock and roll attitude of the Violent Femmes. Heralded by NME as “woozy bluegrass for weary hearts and bleeding minds”, their sound is in debt to classic roots music, while feeling vital, fresh and utterly contemporary.

The Ramshackle Union Band onstage at 10.00 pm

Smugglers Records recording artists the Hellfire Orchestra blend the punk rock meets folk of the Pogues with the London lyrical delivery of The King Blues and the anything goes attitude of Joe Strummer and the Mescalaroes to create a fantastically energetic Saturday night sound. They played their first gig here two months ago, we liked it so much we immediately gave them a residency.
